Americano and Mexicano

Americano and Mexicano are the most popular formats for padel groups with lots of players. How pairings, points and the ranking work.

Updated: October 2026

When more than four people want to play, fixed doubles quickly get unfair. Americano and Mexicano solve that: everyone plays with everyone, and there is an individual ranking at the end.

Americano: everyone plays with everyone

  • Agree on a fixed number of points per match, for example 24. There are no games or sets, just point after point.
  • A match ends when all points are played. At 15-9, both players of one team get 15 points each, the other two get 9 each.
  • After each round partners rotate according to a fixed plan until, ideally, everyone has played with everyone.
  • Whoever has the most points in total at the end wins.

Mexicano: pairings from the table

A Mexicano also uses points, but the pairings are made during the tournament:

  • The first round is drawn.
  • After that the current ranking sets the pairings. On a court, first and fourth typically play second and third.
  • After a few rounds players of similar strength meet and matches stay close.

What you need for an Americano

  • Four players per court. With five, six or seven players, someone sits out each round in turn.
  • A number of points that fits your court booking.
  • Someone to draw pairings and keep the table. That’s usually the most work.

Rebotazo takes care of the last part: it draws the pairings, handles sit-outs and keeps the table. You only enter the points. If you like, a TV at the club shows the table live via a link.

Common questions

What is a padel Americano?

A format where every player plays with changing partners. Each match is played to a fixed number of points, and every player is credited with their team's points. Whoever has the most points in total wins.

What's the difference between Americano and Mexicano?

In an Americano the pairings are fixed from the start and rotate. In a Mexicano they are set after every round from the current ranking, so players of similar strength meet.

How many players do you need for an Americano?

Four per court. With eight players you use two courts. If it doesn't divide evenly, someone sits out each round in turn.

How many points per match?

Usually 16, 21, 24 or 32, depending on how much time you have. The serve usually changes every four points.
