The star point in padel
Since 2026 the FIP uses the star point: at deuce there are two advantages, and at the third deuce a single point decides. Here is how the rule works.
Updated: October 2026
At 40-40 a padel game can drag on. With classic advantage it can swing back and forth for ages; with the golden point it’s over after a single rally. The star point sits right in between, and since 2026 it is the rule of the FIP, the International Padel Federation.
How the star point works
- First deuce (40-40): play advantage as usual. Win the next point for advantage, win another to take the game.
- Second deuce: the advantage was saved and it’s 40-40 again. Advantage is played once more.
- Third deuce: now comes the star point. The next point decides the game, and the receiving pair chooses who returns the serve.
Each pair gets two fair chances to convert an advantage, and the game still can’t go on forever.
Star point, golden point and advantage compared
| Rule | What happens at 40-40 | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Advantage | Play until one pair is two points ahead. | Classic, as in tennis |
| Golden point | The first deuce is decided by one point. | Many tournaments and friendly groups |
| Star point | Two deuces with advantage, one point decides the third. | FIP standard since 2026 |
Why it’s hard in a friendly match
The rule is simple. Keeping count is not: which deuce are we on? After a long rally nobody at the net is quite sure, and the arguing starts.
That’s what Rebotazo is for. Your Apple Watch counts the deuces, shows deuce or star point clearly at 40-40 and taps your wrist when the deciding point comes. If you prefer, switch to golden point or classic advantage before the match.
Common questions
What is the star point in padel?
The FIP deuce rule since 2026. At 40-40 you first play advantage twice. If the game reaches a third deuce, a single point decides it.
Who chooses who receives the star point?
The receiving pair decides which of the two players returns the deciding serve.
How is it different from the golden point?
With the golden point the very first deuce is decided by one point. The star point allows two advantages first and only applies at the third deuce.
Do I have to play the star point in a friendly match?
No. Before the match you can choose advantage, golden point or star point. All that matters is that all four players agree.
